Hafsa H. Mbamba is a highly accomplished tourism development executive with nearly two decades of leadership in shaping the future of Zanzibar’s tourism sector. Known for her visionary approach, she has been at the forefront of driving “Green and Digital” transformations that are redefining the industry.
As CEO of the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT), Hafsa delivered landmark achievements, including the launch of Africa’s first AI-powered tourism innovation platform and the successful Greener Zanzibar Campaign, a flagship initiative promoting sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship. Under her leadership, Zanzibar experienced a significant resurgence in tourism, with visitor numbers increasing by 20% above pre-pandemic levels, coupled with higher tourist receipts and extended stays.
Currently serving as the Tourism Delivery Manager at the President’s Office Delivery Bureau, Hafsa plays a pivotal role in executing the Zanzibar Tourism Strategy, ensuring the strategic alignment and efficient delivery of key government tourism initiatives. Her work is focused on enhancing performance metrics, driving sectoral growth, and ensuring the timely achievement of national tourism objectives.
Hafsa holds a BA in International Tourism Management from London Metropolitan University, blending global best practices with deep local insights. She is recognized for her expertise in destination branding, strategic tourism management, and sustainability, earning the prestigious 2023 Woman of the Year Award in Zanzibar for her contributions to the sector.
In addition to her executive roles, Hafsa serves on the Board of Directors for the Zanzibar Airport Authority (ZAA) and sits on the Advisory Board of the WAJAMAMA Foundation, where she contributes to initiatives that improve healthcare for women and children. Her leadership continues to shape the future of Zanzibar’s tourism, positioning the island as a sustainable and innovative global destination.
